The beta release of Netscape 6 will be launched on April 6 at Internet World, Los Angeles.

Steve Case, America Online's chair and CEO, will unveil the browser in the keynote address Tuesday morning. The keynote was originally to be given by Apple’s Steve Jobs, (see ‘Jobs pulls out of Internet World’).

Built on Gecko, Netscape's standards-based browser technology, Netscape 6 replaces the current Navigator 4x line in its struggle against Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Other than real-time messaging and other Netcentre support, Netscape will volunteer few details about its features. AOL won’t say if this version will replace its browser, though this seems unlikely as it seems AOL 5.0’s beta testing is progressing well.
