Canon has announced the CanoScan 9900F scanner.

The company clkaims it is "the highest performance A4 desktop scanner". The device is a 48-bit colour flatbed film-capable model incorporating two new Canon technologies. The device offers both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 ports.

It offers an optical resolution of 3,200-x-6,400dpi using a six-line Hyper CCD. It also offers Canon's own FARE level 2 automatic film-retouching technology.

The device is capable of scanning up to 24 frames of 35mm film in a single scan with a new optical system designed to deliver high quality effects, said the company.

The high-resolution CCD is complemented by a new lens array, the Super Galileo 2 lens. Canon claims this helps it capture brighter, sharper images than any of its other scanners.

The 9900F will be available from March and cost "around £299" (inc-VAT).
