Symantec has announced Internet security and problem-solving products for Mac OS X.

The range, which contains products such as Norton Internet Security for Macintosh 2.0 and Norton Utilities for Macintosh 7.0, has been designed specifically for Mac OS X. Symantec has dubbed it an “industry first”.

New to Norton Internet Security for Macintosh 2.0 are a stealth protection mode, confidential information controls, and Internet advertisment-blocking features.

A new privacy control safeguards confidential data. This component of Norton Internet Security for Macintosh 2.0 tracks specified confidential information such as social security and credit card numbers.

The privacy feature also offers ad blocking. This obstructs most Internet ads and pop-up windows.

Online security Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec consumer and client product delivery, said: “The increased demand for advanced Internet security solutions for Mac OS X has been one of the driving forces behind Symantec’s efforts to create this new line of products.

“We are adding important new features that address Mac users’ concerns about online security and privacy issues, while also continuing to provide the most comprehensive and reliable problem-solving solutions.”

Apple's vice president of worldwide developer relations, Ron Okamoto, said: “Apple takes a proactive approach towards security within Mac OS X in a variety of ways.

“Symantec’s new product-line for Mac OS X builds on Apple’s commitment towards security by helping to protect computers and networks at multiple entry-points, and we're excited to receive their support.”
