Microsoft has released an update for Office 2001(the Office 2001 Data Access Update), which adds wider data access to the application.

The update installs ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) drivers and a control panel. This lets Microsoft Office 2001 connect to and retrieve data from the following data sources: Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, dBASE, Microsoft Visual FoxPro and America Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) text files.

It requires a standalone version of Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac, Excel 2001 or Word 2001. It only works with classic Mac OS (8.6-9.x). Installation instructions and the downloadable update are available now.
