The UK telecommunications watchdog, Oftel, is urging consumer groups to help it regulate the industry.

Oftel has published proposals on how consumer and industry groups can promote initiatives such as pricing and contract information. The proposals are contained in a document called Encouraging Self and Co-regulation in Telecoms to Benefit Consumers.

David Edmonds, Oftel's director general of telecommunications, said: "Though consumers are benefiting from increasingly competitive markets, regulation is still needed in some areas."

The publication is part of Oftel's move to promote self-regulation within the telecom industry. Edmonds added: "Oftel’s role in co-regulation will be to intervene if necessary to ensure consumers are protected."

Oftel also announced research showing that many consumers remain unaware of their rights and opportunities under current telecommunications law.
