Caere has updated its OCR scanning software OmniPage Pro to version 8.01, as part of the company’s "renewed development commitment" to the Mac.

According to Caere, which is in the process of being bought by Scansoft , other "major innovations" in OmniPage Pro products will be announced later this year.

"With the recent resurgence of Mac sales, we are happy to be able to dedicate important development and marketing resources to our Macintosh OCR products," said Bob Teresi, Caere’s chairman and CEO.

OmniPage Pro converts paper documents into editable, electronic text. The new version supports Mac OS 9, and has support for new scanners like the Agfa Snapscan, Epson Perfection, Microtek Scanmaker and UMAX models.

Registered users of OmniPage Pro 8.0 can download the update free of charge from Caere’s Web site. Crossgrades from other OCR or desktop document management applications - including limited editions that come bundled with scanners - can buy the software for £99.
