Adobe has released a Photoshop plug-in to utilize the Power Mac G5 processor.

The 1.4MB Photoshop 7.0.1 plug-in modifies many Photoshop operations to fully exploit the G5 processor. It also replaces the Adobe Color Engine component with a new version designed for the G5 processor.

The software update is in the vanguard of an anticipated wave of application enhancements that are designed to give existing applications the boost they need to fully-exploit Apple's new G5 processors.

Though the operating system that ships with the new pro Macs is a 32-bit OS, these software updates enable applications to harness more of the features of the 64-bit G5 processor. Such features include the capacity to employ more memory than formerly possible on 32-bit processors. Applications equipped with such updates should see a clear performance boost.

The version of the AltiVecCore plug-in that is installed by this installer will function only with Photoshop 7.0.1. It will not function with Photoshop 7.0, said Adobe.

Adobe told The New York Times that the Photoshop plug-in for the G5 will improve that application's performance by 75-200 per cent.
