Pinnacle Systems has bought Puffin Designs, the publisher of Commotion image-editing software.

Pinnacle paid around $13 million in the stock-for-stock purchase. Pinnacle will also take on up to $2 million in debt and assumed liabilities, the company said yesterday.

Pinnacle, which produces digital-video tools for both professionals and consumers, said it plans to integrate Puffin's technology with its family of content creation products.

Scott Squires, the founder of Puffin, will join Pinnacle as creative visionary – a newly created position.

Pinnacle's president and CEO Mark Sanders said: "This acquisition is part of our strategy to build a low-cost, high-quality infrastructure that will be essential for the next technological wave as broadband Internet connectivity enables full quality video on the Web."
