Sony looks set to hit back at the iPod with a music download service specifically for the PlayStation Portable.

According to The Register, Sony has already developed a delivery mechanism that will allow users to download game levels and software updates. This service will be available when Sony launches the device in the US this March, and in Europe soon after.

The system will then be extended to music in the summer. And The Register speculates: "Given the PSP's multimedia focus, it's entirely possible the service could subsequently be used to deliver video downloads."
