Apple today announced the fastest Power Mac G4 line-up ever, featuring single 1GHz, dual-1.25GHz or dual-1.42GHz processors.

UK prices range from £1,149 to £2,099. The new professional desktop Macs feature built-in support for FireWire 800, 54Mbps AirPort Extreme and, (optionally) Bluetooth wireless networking.

Apple also announced a new 20-inch Cinema Display and reduced prices across its range of flat-panel displays.

Apple vice president of hardware product marketing Greg Joswiak said: "With dual 1.25GHz performance at only £1,599 plus our new 20-inch Cinema Display at just £1,099, Apple is delivering unprecedented value to our professional customers. With FireWire 800 and support for AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, the new Power Macs are the ultimate systems for the digital professional."

These Macs are built on Apple's advanced Xserve architecture, and feature up to 2MB of fast DDR Level 3 cache and 333MHz DDR RAM. The Macs deliver 21 billion floating point operations per second - or 21 gigaflops, Apple claims.

Slot machine The G4s include four high-performance 64-bit 333MHz PCI slots and two external drive bays for optical drives. There's also an AGP 4X slot for the graphics processing unit, with either an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro or Nvidia GeForce MX pre-installed.

Optional graphics cards include the NVidia GeForce4 Titanium and the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, both with 128MB of DDR memory. With eight-pixel pipelines, the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro is currently the world?s leading graphics card, Apple claims.

The Macs also offer four 3.5-inch hard-disk drive expansion bays with either a 60GB, 80GB or 120GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive running at 7200rpm preinstalled. Also, the Power Mac G4 now has a 180GB drive option.

Apple's SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) optical drive for burning and playing DVDs and CDs ships as standard on the top-of-the-line Mac. The company has introduced the new 4x speed drive mechanism in this configuration.

As well as a single FireWire 800 port, Apple has placed two FireWire 400 ports in the Macs, alongside four USB 1.1 ports. 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet is installed.

The software bundle includes the full iLife package, including iTunes3, iPhoto2, iMovie3, and iDVD3.

These Power Macs also ship with: QuickBooks for Mac New User Edition, Microsoft Office v. X Test Drive, FileMaker Pro Trial, Internet Explorer, Acrobat Reader, Art Directors Toolkit, FAXstf, GraphicConverter, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner and Developer Tools.

The single 1GHz Power Mac G4 costs £1,149; the dual 1.25GHz Power Mac G4 costs £1,599. The new top-of-the range dual 1.42GHz Power Mac G4 costs £2,099 and will be available starting next month. Build to order options are also available.
