A top US computing magazine has selected Apple as one of its "mobile innovators of 2001", in recognition of the company's G4 PowerBook.

Mobile Computing magazine praises the PowerBook's project leader, Greg Jozwiak, and describes the machine as "pushing the view of the notebook to new proportions - namely a wide-screen landscape".

It goes on: "If necessity is the mother of invention, ingenuity is the father. The PowerBook whispers the promising look of the future without making us wait for it."

The product was designed to Apple CEO Steve Jobs' specifications: the best notebook in the world.

Other manufacturers meriting a mention include Handspring, Eastman Kodak, Samsung, M-Systems and Palm.
