Apple announced QuickTime Streaming Server 4 at QuickTime Live! yesterday.

This is Apple's open-source standards-based streaming server. Like QuickTime 6, this new iteration supports MPEG-4 streaming. It also supports MP3 streaming.

As a server solution, it doesn't require an MPEG-4 license. As such, Apple has made this solution available now.

Apple claims that as well as improved service quality and skip protection, QuickTime Streaming Server 4 includes: full MPEG-4 support, so MPEG-4 content can be streamed live or on demand; the ability to serve MP3 files or playlists to standard MP3 players, including iTunes or WinAmp; and enhancements to the Web-based administration tools.

The solution is available for free download from Apple today.
