In a first time move, DivX has announced DivX for Mac 6.5, which includes the first release of an official DivX for Mac player.

The Mac version of the software is available for download now.

The new Mac player offers free full-screen playback of high-quality DivX videos on a desktop or through a browser. Features include a desktop dimmer, mouse gesture controls and window fade-out.

DivX for Mac 6.5 can also convert movies into DivX format for playback on over 35 million DivX Certified DVD players, portable media players and other devices. The DivX Converter also outputs video files and the necessary HTML code to embed those movies into websites for use with the DivX Web Player.

"Our DivX for Mac team has done a great job on this release," said Darrius Thompson, company co-founder "The new player is elegant and very easy to use, while at the same time offering the kind of high-quality, cinematic experience that Mac users expect from video products. And the DivX Converter for Mac makes it very easy for anyone to create a high quality DivX file that can be played back on millions of DVD players and portable devices from wide variety of brands, rather than limiting playback to a computer or one kind of portable device."

DivX for Mac 6.5 includes the DivX Converter for Mac, a lightweight, drag-and-drop application that enables users to create high-quality DivX videos from a variety of sources in one easy step. The release also includes the DivX 6 codec for Mac, a QuickTime plug-in that lets Mac users easily playback and export to DivX video from any QuickTime-based application.

DivX for Mac 6.5 is compatible with QuickTime 7 and Mac OS X 10.3.9. The full version costs $19.99. A free trial version available includes a 15-day trial of the DivX Converter and a 6-month trial of DivX Codec for Mac with Pro features. The ability to play back DivX videos does not expire.
