The Recording Industry Association of America RIAA is seeking a summary ruling, in a bid to resolve its legal battle against Napster before it comes to trial.

The request is on the grounds that Napster has been shown to have willingly contributed to the violation of recording industry copyrights.

The motion for the summary judgement was filed on Tuesday with the US District Court for the Northern District of California, where the RIAA filed its lawsuit against Napster in December 1999.

Attorneys for the RIAA requested a hearing at the court on October 1 to address its request.

Napster declined to comment.
