Sony is to cease making CDs that feature built-in technology that limits copying.

The company currently allows customers to copy a CD once onto a personal computer, but uses the Internet to charge a fee for subsequent copying of the same disk.

Associated Press reports that Sony has now announced that it will stop protecting its CDs in this manner, "because the message against illegally copying CDs for uses such as in file-sharing over the Internet has widely sunk in".

According to company spokeswoman Kimiko Ohashi: "Sony Music has learned that only a small part of the population illegally copy CDs."
