The manufacturer of Apple's SuperDrive has launched a 16x DVD Dual burner, offering DVD writing speeds double that of the current SuperDrive.

Pioneer claims the product is the world's first 16x DVD Dual burner, with writing speeds of 16x for DVD+R/-R, 4x for DVD+R DL (single-sided double-layer), 4x for DVD+RW/-RW, 32x for CD-R and 24x for CD-RW.

Apple's SuperDrive, standard in all G5s, the eMac, and the iMac, currently writes DVD-R discs at up to 8x speed, reads DVDs at up to 10x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed, and reads CDs at up to 32x speed.

Whether Apple will use the enhanced technology in its SuperDrive DVD/CD writer/burner remains to be seen.
