Berklee College of Music has released over 80 music lessons for free download in MP3, QuickTime and PDF formats.

The lessons are taken from the college's curriculum and were developed at the college, which is encouraging musicians to download and share the lessons, which are available online and also through peer-to-peer file-sharing services, such as LimeWire.

Associate vice president of the college, Dave Kusek, said: "Offering free education on the Internet and through file-sharing networks underscores the college's core beliefs that these channels are an effective way to openly distribute meaningful educational content to a global audience, as well as serve as a powerful promotional platform for artists to market, distribute, and sell their music."

The initial tranche of lessons cover: instrument performance, music production and technology, songwriting and arranging, music business and careers, music education and improvisation.
