Matthias Krauss Software has released Mac OS X beta drivers for Intel’s Play QX3 USB microscope.

It’s a boost for UK educators. 2002 is Science Year, and UK schools were given Intel Play QX3 USB microscopes to mark the occasion, an education industry source reports.

Unfortunately, no Mac drivers existed for this Windows-only peripheral, making it a “useless gift” for Mac-using schools, such as those in the Isle of Man. Alternative solutions do exist, but these were not donated to the schools.

The Macam drivers support Intel’s microscope, as well as some QuickCam Express/DexxaCam models. The drivers offer white-balance control and a simulated dummy-camera for testing. A full list of supported cameras is available on the company’s site.

The beta drivers are available for download.
