Apple has announced .Mac for Education on its US site.

The initiative enables education institutions to buy an unlimited number of .Mac one-year subscriptions at the discounted price of $59 per user. The offer is for a minimum of ten subscriptions.

The .Mac for Education membership includes 50MB of online storage with iDisk; a IMAP email account with 10MB of storage; HomePage Web-page builder for easy Web publishing and hosting; backup software for archiving important files to iDisk, CD, or DVD; Virex virus protection from McAfee; and online support for members.

.Mac is a suite of Internet services that replaces iTools as a paid membership program and includes expanded versions of iDisk, HomePage, and Email.

Apple has extended to October 14 the discount deadline for iTools users to switch to .Mac accounts.

Apple UK was not available to comment on whether the initiative will be extended to the UK.
