Xerox has announced its “stunningly fast” A3 monochrome laser printer, the Phaser 5400.

The 5400 printer can churn out 40 pages per minute, with a first-page turnaround of just nine seconds, according to the company.

It’s aimed at medium to large workgroups and has dedicated network features.

PowerPC processor The Phaser 5400 also features a built-in 266MHz PowerPC G3 processor equipped with 32MB of RAM. The maximum memory supported is 192MB. The standard configuration offers USB and parallel connectivity, with 10/100Base-T Ethernet.

It supports media weights up to 200gsm, and can accommodate paper sizes up to A3. The 5400 has a 650-sheet input tray as standard, this is expandable up to 3,250 sheets using optional paper trays.

The laser printer offers a resolution of 1,200-x-1,200dpi. Printer languages supported include Adobe PostScript3, PCL5e, PCL6 and a variety of emulations. The printer works with all current Mac operating systems, including Mac OS X. It also supports most varieties of Unix (including Linux) and Windows.

Web management Print management comes courtesy of Xerox’s CentreWare Web network-management system. The company describes this as an “advanced enterprise-wide printer-management tool that enables the easy installation, configuration and trouble shooting of all the printers on a network”. This solution integrates CentreWare IS, which offers the same functions and remote printer-management through any Web browser.

Other standard features include: edge-to-edge printing; secure printing; watermarks; and booklet printing. At the high end, the printer will print documents emailed to it, and sustain a duty cycle of up to 200,000 pages per month.

Three models are available. The £1,957 Phaser 5400N is the basic model, with all the features described. The £2,445 5400DT adds an additional 500-sheet A3 paper feeder and duplex printing. Finally, the £3,386 5400DX has 64MB of RAM installed, duplex printing, two additional 500-sheet A3 paper feeders and an internal hard drive, which can save frequently printed documents.
