RealVNC announces support for Apple’s iPod Out

VNC® Mobile Solution for Automotive offers broadest support for mobile devices

27th October 2010: RealVNC, the original developer and leading provider of VNC® technology, today announced support for Apple’s iPod Out functionality, enabling seamless integration of Apple mobile devices with in-vehicle infotainment systems. RealVNC will be demonstrating this capability at the Telematics Update Conference in Munich on 3rd & 4th November 2010, booth 11.

iPod Out is a new feature of iOS 4 that allows a connected iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to output and display the iPod video interface on the screen of an in-vehicle head unit and to accept remote control commands from vehicle input devices, such as the head unit touch screen, bezel controls, steering wheel buttons and BMW’s iDrive. Users are able to access and play music collections stored on their iPod or iPhone direct from the vehicle’s main display unit, creating a simpler and safer way of browsing and selecting playlists and switching tracks using the vehicle controls.

This new functionality further enhances and extends RealVNC’s VNC® Mobile Solution for Automotive, that enables a single common head unit HMI design to automatically detect, access and control virtually any mobile device directly from the widest range of in-vehicle embedded operating systems found in today’s, and future, vehicle infotainment systems. RealVNC continues to add additional capabilities and new devices, offering support for the broadest range of mobile devices. The iPod Out capability is available now to those partners who are registered members of the Apple Made for iPod programme.

VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive is an OEM package and supports a range of in-vehicle embedded operating systems including Linux, Windows XP, Automotive, CE, QNX, Qt, Android, µITRON, T-Kernel and other proprietary operating systems. RealVNC also supports all leading mobile devices, including Windows Mobile, Symbian, Blackberry, iPhone, Android, WebOS and Linux, as well as the recently proposed Terminal Standard creating a truly cross-platform solution.

Tom Blackie, Vice President Mobile, RealVNC said, “Mobile devices are increasingly where we store and organize our music and entertainment, so it is natural to want to integrate them seamlessly with our car stereo systems and hands free controls when we are on the road. The additional support for iPod Out further strengthens the position of our VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive as the leading device and vendor-independent technology for driving this integration of mobile and in-vehicle technology.”
