First Look Review: iPhone 3.0 UK Software Update

So the Apple iPhone 3.0 software update has finally arrived. The iPhone 3.0 software update introduces a slew of new features (over 300 according to Apple) and looks set to take the phone in several new directions.

The Software Update works on the first-generation iPhone; iPhone 3G; and is pre-installed on the iPhone 3G S due to go on sale Friday 19 June.

As with other upgrades, the installation of the iPhone 3.0 software update is performed via iTunes. You will require > iTunes 8.2, which was also recently released by Apple. iTunes 8.2 is installed via the Software Update feature in Finder; whereas the iPhone 3.0 software update is accessed inside iTunes itself.

It’s a fairly hefty download and it adds a raft of new functionality to the phone. Keen-eyed readers will find little that wasn’t announced by Apple at its iPhone 3.0 Preview event that Apple held on 17 March; but there are a few features that were previously only known through various rumours.

Having said that, there are such a range of new features available that you’re bound to find something you haven’t heard about yet. Before we get to some of the most esoteric additions, let’s take a look at some of the main attractions:
