Flip Boom Cartoon review
Toon Boom claims to be the global leader in animation software, with a broad portfolio of tools from network animation solution Harmony, through to the consumer Storyboard, a desktop production studio. It has debuted on the Mac App Store with Flip Boom Cartoon, a fun but highly functional animation tool for children.
The functional features and competitive price make it a great entry-level program for budding 2D animators. Aimed at kids aged 6 to 12, the interface is a highly simplified and stylised version of Toon Boom’s other tools. Fun is foremost, with a library of templates to get kids making frame-by-frame animation quickly. Bundled sounds and clipart bring cartoons to life immediately. You can also use traditional drawing tools, record your own soundtrack and import artwork from other sources.
Beyond the chunky icons and template-driven workflow lurks a powerful set of traditional animation features. For example, Onion Skinning enables young animators to see previous frames as they change the movement in the sequence; the timeline provides control over elements frame by frame; and two content layers can be used to create independently animated foreground and background content.
Fun, easy to use and also educational, Flip Boom Cartoon’s not just for kids
When a cartoon has been completed, it can be uploaded to YouTube or transferred to an iOS device. Animations can also be saved in Flash and QuickTime formats. Flip Boom is a creative and colourful introduction to the world of animation.
