Canon Pixma MX885 review

Canon’s Pixma MX885 is fast and versatile, producing excellent text, graphics and photo output. However, its five-cartridge printing system means that the running costs are a bit higher than those of rival printers that get by with just four inks.

It’s an imposing, glossy black slab of plastic that squats on your desk and occasionally winks one of its many glowing buttons at you. It’s well suited to office work, though, as it includes a printer, scanner, copier and fax machine, as well a 35-sheet automatic document feeder. There are two separate paper input trays, each of which holds 150-sheets, and it supports automatic two-sided printing – it even asks if you want to leave a margin on your pages so that you can staple them together.

The MX885 also includes both Ethernet and wireless networking so you can easily set it up in offices that don’t have WiFi. All those features ensure that the MX885 will work well in a busy office environment, but its most outstanding feature is its five-cartridge printing system. It uses the four conventional cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks when printing in colour, but also uses a special pigmented black ink for printing black text.

The results are very impressive – text output is smooth and sharp, and genuinely rivals that of a laser printer. The MX885 even manages to produce good photo output on plain office paper, while the colours on more expensive photo paper are bold and show sharp contrast.

Canon quotes the speed of the MX885 in ‘image per minute’; in our tests it produced a respectable performance of just over 10ppm for mono printing and a more modest 5ppm for colour. The one real drawback is that those five ink cartridges push the printing costs up significantly – to about 3.5p per page for black and white and 9.6p for a colour page.

OUR VERDICT

If you need high-quality output for photo prints or eye-catching marketing materials then the MX885 will earn its keep. However, there are cheaper options available for people who just need black and white printing and occasional business graphics.
