Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4535 review
The Epson WP-4535 is one of the largest and most expensive printers in this group, so home workers might prefer to opt for something a little smaller and with a lower initial purchase price. However, it’s a good choice if you need a high-speed workhorse printer to share with other people in your office.
The bulky unit houses a printer, scanner, copier and fax machine. There’s a 250-sheet input tray in the base of the unit, and an 80-sheet tray at the back – allowing you to have two different types of paper ready at all times – and it can do automatic two-sided printing as well. There’s also a 30-sheet document feeder, and both Ethernet and WiFi for your office network
Unlike its rivals, who tend to quote speeds based on low-quality draft printing, Epson quotes more realistic print speeds based on its standard-quality settings. It suggests 16ppm for black-and-white printing and 11ppm for colour. The first figure was spot on and left most of its rivals trailing way behind for black and white printing. Colour printing wasn’t quite so good, coming in at 7ppm, but that still made it one of the faster printers for mixed text and graphics documents.
Print quality was excellent for both text and graphics, although photo printing had a slight weakness; photos printed on plain paper showed definite banding at times. However, switching to glossy photo paper eliminated that problem and produced very good quality photo prints.
Epson’s WP-4535 printer is fast and versatile, with low running costs, perfect for a small office environment
The high purchase price of the WP-4535 is offset by lower running costs. Epson was rather coy about printing costs – which is annoying since their advertising boasts that the WP-4535 is 50 per cent cheaper than a laser printer – but our calculations suggest that its ‘Eiffel Tower’ high-yield cartridges work out at a mere 1.3p for mono printing and a competitive 3.8p for colour.
If you regularly need to produce high-quality photo output for brochures and other marketing materials then a model such as the Canon MX885 might be a better choice. However, the speed, versatility and low running costs of the WP-4535 make it an excellent choice for ordinary text and business graphics documents.
