Evri for iPad review

So another news-reader app joins a rather crowded market, but Evri for iPad hopes to differentiate itself through its topic-based approach to news gathering.

Using a powerful content-filtering technology, Evri pours the latest trending media into topical streams intended to make it easy for users to discover the content they’re most interested in. It also features Facebook and Twitter integration, and presents links posted to the Twitter or Facebook feeds as articles that can be easily read in-line. Articles can also be saved to Read It Later or Instapaper for later.

There are six main categories: Top News, US & World, Entertainment, Sports, Business and Technology. A Now Following section features your personalised list of favourite topics. Tap on a category and a bar on the left lists sub-topics, with trending topics shown on the main screen. Pick a topic and you’ll be presented with several articles from around the web, plus related items.

The app is fairly US-centric but the topic search lets you quickly find local content, which can be saved to the Now Following section. In this way, you can create your own individual news feed, following only the topics that most interest you, and get updated with current news for each topic when you open the app.

Evri is easy to use and sports a bright, attractive interface, but the topic-based  news app won’t suit everyone

OUR VERDICT

One issue was that the app was often a little sluggish when first opened. Also, being presented with many stories on one topic can be overwhelming. However, it’s an innovative app that will appeal to some, though not all.
