The cloud-based SimpleNote is a great way to store notes and ideas online so that they can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. The service has proved incredibly popular and there are now a number of other apps and services that use it to store information, or provide a new front end that can be used in place of the web site. SimpleNote, as the name suggests, is a service that concentrates on simplicity rather than features and this is something that is true of the free client app Metanota.

This impressive SimpleNote client does away with any superfluous frills, focusing only on what is absolutely necessary. This stripped back look means that you are free to focus on the content of your notes without having to worry about working out how to perform different tasks or getting distracted by a complicated interface. The notes you create can be organized into folder and any tags you add to allow for easier sorting and filtering are synchronized between your computer and your online account.

But just because the app is basic, it does not mean that text formatting is not available – there’s just no need to click toolbar buttons. If you want to create a list in a note, just enter a bullet point at the start of a paragraph, while entering a dash will turn the text into a header. If you are already a SimpleNote user, this could just be the tool that transforms an already useful service into something essential, but if you are yet to try it out, it serves as a great introduction.

This is the free version of the app which is supported by advertisements but these can be removed with an in-app purchase. Future release promise to include support for additional cloud services such as Dropbox, Gmail and Evernote, and there is also a Pro version on the cards. Whether a pro account will be needed to access anything other than Simple Note remains to be seen, but as a free app in its current state, it is a useful addition to your Mac.
