The elite fashion labels have gone iPad-mad, unveiling ever more luxurious and beautiful cases that provide a little protection and a lot of glamour.

We take a trip to the catwalk

Paul Smith iPad 2 Case

URL  Price £219

Paul Smith’s printed leather iPad 2 case has a better claim to practicality than some of the models here, featuring a flip cover and internal stand, plus an opening for the camera. There are black leather trims (the firm specifies 100 per cent calf leather) and a glorious purple lining.

Ideal for the nattily dressed businessman on the go, particularly in the neatly striped print shown here. (You can also go for a wonderfully vivid multicolour swirl that reminds us of the background of Munch’s Scream.)

Louis Vuitton iPad Case

URL  Price £255

A sober black-and-dark-grey chequerboard design adorns this simple but effective number from Louis Vuitton.

It’s a sleeve rather than a full-body case (with a notch at the top to help you withdraw the tablet), but the hard-wearing canvas exterior should provide decent protection as well as a sharp look. There’s also a microfibre lining, so you won’t scratch the iPad’s screen, and it’s nicely slim for ease of portability.

Smythson Arlington Folding iPad Case

URL   Price £325

Part of the Arlington Collection, Smythson’s iPad case is so tasteful we can hardly bear it. It’s constructed from black calfskin leather and lined with light-brown Nubuck, a kind of velvety, buffed rawhide material. It can be folded back to make a stand; you get the choice of various angles.

The makers acknowledge that it was designed for the first iPad, but insist it will fit the iPad 2 as well. The short-named or deep-pocketed may wish to splash out a further £6.95 per letter and silver-stamp their initials on the case’s exterior.

Pipetto iPad 2 Smart Cover Forest Green

URL   Price £99.99

If you’re looking for a fashionable iPad 2 case that offers solid protection and plenty of functionality, Pipetto’s HunterWanderer could be the perfect choice. Handcrafted from waxed cotton and Italian leather, the range has an air of quality and style.

As well as a sturdy stand and typing/viewing angle, Pipetto’s case has an extendable handle, which can be placed around a car headrest by unsnapping the press studs. The iPad’s functions and ports are all accessible, apart from the rear-facing camera.

Hugo Boss Gagarin iPad2 Fabricase

URL   Price £69.95

Made of tough fabric, this dark, smart iPad sleeve from Hugo Boss is as practical as it is stylish. It’s designed to be slipped into a bag – the slim shape won’t add much bulk to your tablet – but offers protection against accidental bumps and drops when carried around on its own.

Not one for those who wish to stand out, perhaps, but an understated and elegant accessory.
