Apple released its newest 8th generation iPad 10.2in on 18 September 2020 – with the major differences being primarily on the inside. The iPad 2020 packs an A12 Bionic chip and is the first to boast Apple's Neural Engine, which allows faster image processing, better AR experiences, and improved Siri response.

You can order the 10.2in iPad now from Apple as well as these retailers, or read more about the 8th gen iPad right here (including details on price, specs and new features).

As for the outside, the new 10.2in iPad offers the same measurements as its 2019 predecessor – both are 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm (9.8 x 6.8 x 0.30in). This means that cases for last year's model should fit the 2020 model as well.

We've rounded up the best cases out there so far for the 10.2in iPad 2020 and 2019 right here.

Apple Smart Cover for 10.2in iPad (2020 & 2019)

Apple Smart Cover for 10.2in iPad (2020 & 2019)

Of course, the obvious place to start looking for a case is at Apple, which currently offers three case options for its newest iPad.

The cheapest of the lot is still a sturdy £49/$49/AUD$79 for the Smart Cover – "smart" because it automatically turns the screen on (or off) upon opening (or closing) the cover.

Bear in mind the case only protects the front of the iPad and leaves the back exposed, which may not be ideal if you're somewhat butterfingered.

Apple Smart Keyboard for 10.2in iPad

For even more functionality, Apple also has its Smart Keyboard Case, but at the cost of £159/US$159/AUD$235. The Smart Keyboard connects via the Smart Connector and effectively converts the iPad into a mini laptop.

Like the Smart Cover it only covers the front of the iPad though. The Smart Keyboard is compatible with both the 7th and 8th generation iPad.

Casemade Apple iPad 10.2 2019 (7th Gen) Case

Casemade Apple iPad 10.2 2019 (7th Gen) Case

If you’re after a specific-fit case for your iPad rather than a sleeve or folio, then Casemade’s premium leather case should appeal.

It’s available in black and tan leather, and has a black plastic insert into which your iPad clips securely. It fits both the 7th and 8th gen models.

The overall design is much like many of Casemade’s previous iPad cases, so the front cover can be flipped back and tucked into a flap on the rear to form a stand that can hold your iPad at an ideal angle for watching video.

Flip the whole thing over and you’ve got a pretty good angle for typing, too.

The leather is top quality, as is the stitching, and at £39.90 (US$59.90) it’s good value. Also available from Amazon at the same price.

MoKo 10-11in Tablet Sleeve

MoKo 10-11in Tablet Sleeve

Moko is brand we've recommended before for our cases round ups. Its tablet sleeve fits up to 11in devices, which means the 10.2in (both 8th and 7th gen) should fit comfortably with some additional room should you want to pop the Apple Pencil in there too.

It offers a separate pocket at the back for notes and a card slot as well. With its slim built you can slide the case into your backpack or laptop bag without any additional bulk. The cover closes with a magnetic flat, so you can rest assured everything will stay in place.

Available in black (£13.99/US$13.99) and brown (£13.95/US$15.99).

ProCase 10.2in Faux Leather Sleeve

Procase is another brand that make stylish accessories at affordable prices. The Wallet Sleeve is similar to Moko's case above but would over a more snug fit as it's designed specifically for tablet sizes up to 10.5in.

We also like the stylish curved divet that helps you remove the tablet from the case. The Wallet Sleeve is available for £14.99/US$13.99.

The case fits tablets up to 11 inches in size and costs £22.09/US$30.99. There's a Lite version as well for £19.54/US$25.99/AUD$41.23.

Kizuna 10-11in Tablet Bag

Here's another carrying case option which zips close, which may offer relief to those looking to secure their new iPads with more than a flap. The Kizuna tablet sleeve bag accommodates the 9.7in iPad up to the 11in iPad Pro, so the 10.2in iPad should have no trouble fitting.

The fabric is spill-resistant and is insulated with a shock absorbing foam. Plus a soft interior lining is sure to keep your 10.2 iPad safe from scuffs and scratches.
