With the launch of the iPhone 12 range, Apple brought back a feature we've all missed: MagSafe. Except it's not quite in the form we remember.

In its original iteration, MagSafe was a nifty way to keep the charging cable secured to a MacBook. The new version of MagSafe allows your iPhone 12 to magnetically snap into place on its wireless charging pad - which means your phone will get properly charged each time, without you having to fuss around to ensure it's on the sweet spot.

Another win: MagSafe also charges faster, offering 15W rather than the 7.5W you get with iPhones using Qi wireless charging.

Charging aside, the magnetic feature of MagSafe opens the floodgates for nifty magnetic add-ons - the best of which we're exploring right here.

MagSafe charger

Apple MagSafe Charger

This is of course the first accessory anyone wanting to try MagSafe will want to get hold of.

Apple's MagSafe charger allows iPhone 12 users to snap their phone in place, which is a great benefit if you've often woken up to find that your iPhone didn't charge because it didn't make proper contact with the charging pad.

What's even better is the MagSafe charging pad charges at 15W instead of 7.5W, which is the Qi standard charging speed.

Pick up the MagSafe (£39/US$39/AUD$65) charger from Apple, Amazon or Currys.

Aukey Aircore Magnetic Wireless Charger

Aukey Aircore Magnetic Qi Certified Wireless Charger

Aukey's MagSafe-compatible iPhone charger isn't quite as elegant as Apple's official model: while one of its surfaces has just a tasteful logo, the flip side is festooned with tech specs and legal badges. But it does the job just as well and costs a lot less.

In tests it charged an iPhone 12 Pro from 0 to 24% in 30 minutes, which compares favourably to the 20% we got from Apple's charger. And the magnet is powerful enough for the pad to jump satisfyingly on to the phone when it's still a centimetre away.

It's slightly bigger than the Apple model, in both diameter and thickness, but we found this actually makes it easier to remove from the phone when you've finished charging.

Otterbox Figura case with MagSafe

Otterbox Figura Series Case for iPhone 12/12 Pro

If you're buying a new iPhone 12, you probably want a case to keep it looking sharp. And if you want it to be compatible with MagSafe wireless charging, you certainly should get a MagSafe-compatible phone case too.

That's right. Not all phone cases will preserve the MagSafe feature. So unless you don't mind peeling your case off each time you want to charge, we'd recommend picking up a compatible case.

Otterbox is one of the best case-makers, and the Figura is sure to grab anyone's attention with its colourful eye-catching design. It's available in four colour combinations with prices starting at £39.95/£49.95/AUD$79.95 (for the iPhone 12 mini).

Pick it up from Apple, the exclusive reseller.

Mous Limitless 4.0

Mous Limitless 4.0

Here's another excellent third-party iPhone case offering MagSafe integration. In this case you're getting high-level damage resistance, thanks to the company's AiroShock shock-absorbing tech, but without the bulk you get with many robust cases.

There are versions of the Mous Limitless 4.0 for all four 12-series iPhone models, with five designs to choose from. You may also like to consider the company's (also MagSafe-compatible) Infinity case, which doesn't have AiroShock but is transparent, which means you can enjoy your phone's design.

Apple iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe

Apple iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe

Remember when we said MagSafe opens up the world of nifty add-ons? Well, this wallet attachment is a prime example.

Available directly from Apple, the Leather Wallet with MagSafe lets you magnetically add a handy compartment on the back of your iPhone where you can stow away up to three cards - in theory, at least. It's a tight fit.

You can add the wallet attachment directly to your phone, or to a MagSafe compatible case.

The Leather Wallet with MagSafe is available in four colours, including California Poppy (pictured), Baltic Blue, Saddle Brown and Black.

Pick it up from Apple or from Amazon for £59/US$59/AUD$89.

Ekster MagSafe Card Holder

Ekster MagSafe Card Holder

Apple's MagSafe wallet isn't the only option: Ekster has a rather premium-looking - yet relatively low-priced - cardholder that'll attach to the back of your iPhone 12.

Ekster's offering is impressively thin, at least until you start adding cards, and has a thumb slot on the rear for quick access to the contents. The wallet can hold three cards: it's a snug fit, but it works.

MagSafe Duo Charger

MagSafe Duo Charger

The Duo Charger is a bedside must-have if you own multiple Apple devices and want to charge them at the same time. The Duo Charger works with iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods with wireless charging, and other Qi-certified devices.

It also conveniently folds up if you want to stow it away.

Grab it from Apple for £129/$129/AUD$199 or from Amazon where it can be slightly cheaper.

Belkin Car Mount

Belkin Car Vent Mount Pro with MagSafe

Sure, magnetic car mounts pre-exist MagSafe, but it also involved more faff – like buying a compatible magnetic case or sticking an adhesive magnetic plate on the back of the phone to go on the mount. Gone are those days!

The Belkin car mount is a single block that sticks onto the back of your iPhone and right into you car vent. It's compatible with the full iPhone 12 range.

Be sure to remove any wallet cases attached to your iPhone 12 with MagSafe – or at least your cards. You don't want to accidentally damage your credit cards sandwiching them between your phone and this magnetic mount, as Belkin itself warns.

Pick up the Belkin car mount directly from Apple for £34.95/$39.95/AUD$59.95.
