Best iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad mini cases

There's now a large collection of Apple tablets of all shapes and sizes, and a sea of unique cases available for each. In this article, we're showcasing our favourite cases for the iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2 and the newest additions to the lineup, the iPad Pro 9.7 and iPad Pro 12.9. We've picked out our favourites, and you'll find links to even more choices for each iPad.

There are many styles of case available for Apple's tablets, from keyboard folios to smart covers, so how do you know which is right for you? Folio covers usually provide some kind of built-in kickstand to make media viewing/gaming a lot more enjoyable, and many also feature a Bluetooth keyboard.

Smart covers tend to use magnets to secure themselves to your iPad, and although they may not provide the best overall protection for your device, it does allow it to keep its slim form factor. It's also easily removed, and its auto on/off feature will make your digital life a little easier.

You've also got the option of going for a traditional hard case. These are the most popular and will provide a decent level of protection for your iPad, depending on the case you choose. As well as being built for protection, these are usually the types of cases that come in the the largest variety of designs so finding one to fit your tastes shouldn't be too difficult.

Read on for our pick of the best iPad cases for each iPad and for every lifestyle. If you're still undecided about which iPad to choose, read our iPad buying guide 2016.

Pipetto Origami for iPad Pro

As it's the newest of Apple's iPads, let's start with the iPad Pro.

The Pipetto Origami case covers both the front and back of the iPad Pro with neat cut-outs for ports and buttons. The origami design helps the front cover transform into various angles of stand, too.

We also love that it comes in various different colours and has a fantastic design, which works a treat when watching content on your iPad Pro.

Best iPad Pro keyboard cases: Logitech CREATE

RRP: £109.99

If you're looking for more than just a case for your iPad Pro, you'll want to investigate keyboard cases. Apple has its own Smart Keyboard case which costs £139, but is only available with a US layout.

Unlike other keyboards out there, the Logitech CREATE connects with your iPad Pro thought the Smart Connector, rather than via a Bluetooth connection. This comes after a few people have previously complained about the problems Bluetooth keyboards have with the iPad Pro.

The keyboard and case combo isn't cheap, but does provide you with a well-designed and versatile keyboard that works flawlessly with the iPad Pro. Finally, it comes in a UK layout, which is a huge plus for us UK International QWERTY users.

Twelve South SurfacePad for iPad mini

The best thing about the iPad mini (apart from its portability) is the fact that an iPad mini case will fit the iPad mini, mini 2 and mini 3 (the mini 4 has a different design, so beware). Apple has its very own Smart Case, which can be found for £55.

One of our favourite iPad mini cases is the SurfacePad by Twelve South. We loved the SurfacePad for the iPhone (see best iPhone cases here) so we're glad that it has made a comeback in the form of a case for the iPad mini 1/2/3.

It's made from smooth, genuine leather and lined with microfiber to prevent scratches and marks. It covers both the front and back of Apple's mini tablet, while also acting as a stand thanks to the clever placement of magnets.

STM dux for iPad mini 4

The iPad mini 4 has slightly different dimensions to the previous iterations. Apple has a few cases which are designed for the iPad mini 4, one of which is the Silicone Case, which can be found for £49.

The dux case from STM comes with the assurance that it can be dropped 26 times from 4 feet in a military standard test. Don’t do that if you buy it – but this is an excellently protective case for your highly breakable iPad mini. Protective yet stylish and available in a rainbow of colours, it has a clever magnetic tab fastening that doubles up as a way to stand your iPad for typing or excessive Netflix consumption. A transparent back shows off your device amongst the rubberised protection on offer.

Be.ez Folio for iPad Air 1

Even though the iPad Air isn't the latest iPad that Apple has to offer, it's proven to be very popular among consumers and many manufacturers still produce cases for it.

Many people would assume that cases for the iPad Air would fit the iPad Air 2 and vice versa, but the updated iPad Air 2 has a slightly thinner form factor, making most cases unusable. Apple has a few iPad Air cases, including the Smart Cover which can be found for £29

The case will fully cover both the front and back of your iPad, while also acting as an adjustable stand. For an extra level of protection, the holder fitted inside the case is made from TPU soft plastic for added shock absorption.

As well as protecting your iPad, it also looks great as it's covered in thick cotton - something you rarely see in iPad cases.

Invision Smart Case Cover for iPad Air 2

In October 2014, Apple launched its iPad Air 2, which is even thinner than the already super-thin iPad Air 1. There are hundreds of cases available for the iPad Air 2 in all sorts of colours, styles and designs. You'll find cases with stands, some with keyboards, some that are slim for minimum protection and others that are huge to help make the iPad Air 2 indestructible.

Apple has its very own line of iPad Air 2 cases, including the Smart Case (PRODUCT)RED which can be found for £65.

This simple, yet beautifully designed case looks and feels amazing given its cheap price tag of £19.99 for the premium model and £9.99 for the normal version.

The case comes in various different colours and provides you with full protection of your iPad and also has a few different angles in which you can position the iPad.

Best iPad cases for kids

If you've got children, and they've expressed an interest in using your iPad, and for some reason you're okay with this, then a tough case should be top of your shopping list.

There are lots of kid-friendly iPad cases on the market, and there's sure to be a design that appeals to your child while protecting the tablet from being dropped by clumsy small hands. We've collected a few of our favourites, covering every model of iPad from iPad 1 to iPad Pro 9.7in (although we recommend giving an older model to your child, not the latest edition!) in a dedicated article: The best iPad cases for kids.

Belkin Portable Tablet Stage

If you're looking for more than just a case for your iPad to make the most of its handy apps, you could consider buying a stand. It can open up new uses for your iPad, and make the tablet even more convenient.

Take the Belkin Portable Tablet Stage, for example. It's perfect for giving presentations and it even comes with an Apple HD adapter for connecting the iPad to a projector or display.

There are plenty more brilliant iPad stands listed in our best stands for iPad article.
