Dark Mode: making Yosemite cool and moody

Yosemite’s new Dark Mode gives the whole interface a new style. It blacks out the Dock and reverses the Menu bar.

We think Dark Mode is nicer than the regular interface.

The Happy Finder (and other gorgeous icons)

Look! Even the Finder is a lot happier in Yosemite.

All of the icons have had a spruce up and they look gorgeous.

Launchpad is usable at last

We’ve never really used Launchpad that much. In Mavericks we find the Launchpad clunky and slower than the Applications folder. Yosemite changes all of that.

Launchpad is now super-fast, the icons are larger and more click-able and the integrated Search bar enables you to quickly find the program you’re after.

Spotlight is now up front and central

Apple has moved Spotlight from its pokey corner and placed it slap bang in the middle of the screen. Press Command + Spacebar to bring up Spotlight in the middle of the screen.

The new positioning makes Spotlight a lot easier to use and more obvious for newcomers.

Spotlight Search is much wider than before

Spotlight has become much more powerful and now integrates directly with Wikipedia, iTunes and Bing to offer information directly in Spotlight.

You will find yourself using Spotlight rather than heading to Safari in many instances.

Mail Markup: you’ll love editing notes in email attachments

Mail Markup is an amazing new feature in Yosemite that we’re bound to use all the time.

It enables you to add text, arrows and notes to a PDF or Image attached to a Mail message.

It even enables you add a loupe circle to zoom into part of the image.

Taking a phone call on your Mac

Of all the continuity features to look forward to (and there are a lot) it is the integration of Mac OS X Yosemite and the Phone app on your iPhone that is the best.

Taking phone calls on your Mac is going to be a revelation.

Notification Centre is packed with new features

The Notification Centre is no longer just for telling you about App Store updates.

The new Notification Centre has a World Clock, Calculator, Weather App, Stock Alerts. In many ways its more functional than the Dashboard.

And you can now post to your social media sites directly from the Notification Centre.

iCloud Drive makes the iPad a proper workhorse

Long-standing Mac fans will remember iDisk and may get a bit sniffy about iCloud Drive. This is a mistake: iCloud Drive is much, much more powerful than iDisk and its direct integration with iPad apps makes it a real game-changer.

You can now access files created on iPad directly on your Mac (and vice versa) and iPad apps can access files created in other apps. iCloud Drive going to make the iPad a complete laptop alternative.
