Since you're reading this, you probably have a good understanding of VPNs and why you want one to use with your Mac. But in case you're not fully up to speed, they're designed primarily for online privacy, unblocking videos, accessing websites or streaming services that aren't available in your region. They are also an essential tool if you have a MacBook and connect to open Wi-Fi networks in cafes, hotels, airports and other places.

Choosing a VPN can be difficult, and this is compounded by the fact that there are so many offers and discounts. That's where we come in. All of the services you'll find below are ones we'd use ourselves (and we do on a daily basis) and we only list the best possible discounts which you can get by clicking the View Deal button below.

All these deals save a significant amount compared to paying for each of these services on a rolling monthly subscription.

The best deal right now is from Ivacy where you can save over 90%. This brings the cost down to as little as a ridiculous 74p per month. Don't be put off by the fact it's for five years because it's so cheap that it's no more expensive than some of the two-year deals on offer from competitors.

You'll find Ivacy in our round up of the best VPNs for Mac, and below are the best deals available currently from all the major VPN providers, along with expert buying advice.

3. CyberGhost VPN 18-month subscription

From: CyberGhost

Was: £185.22

Now: £38.70 (£2.15 per month)  (79% off)

Usually you have to take out a three-year CyberGhost subscription to get the best price. But there's now an 18-month offer which makes it £2.15 per month.

Ignore the message about "Get 6 EXTRA FREE months on the 1-year plan!" since this isn't true: it's £2.15 per month with no free months. If the six months really are free, then the monthly price for the first 12 months is £3.22, not £2.15.

You'll find CyberGhost at number four in our round-up of the best VPNs.

4. PureVPN five-year subscription

From: PureVPN

When you make as if to leave - by moving your mouse pointer off the web page - a five-year deal should appear which costs $1.65 per month (approx. £1.30).

6. Private Internet Access 2-year subscription

From: Private Internet Access

Was: £194.16

Now: £56.99 (£2.37 per month)  (71% off)

Private Internet Access's current offer gets you 71% off the one-year subscription. It's currently ranked fifth in our best VPN chart – read our full review here.

Currently PIA is offering two months free, so you'll get 26 months for the price of 24. The £2.19/mo pricing is misleading: that's the monthly cost if you spread the £56.99 payment over 26 months, without getting any months free. The actual deal price is £2.37 per month.

Whichever way you look at it, it's not a lot to pay for what is a great VPN service.

7. Express VPN one-year subscription (3 months free)

From: ExpressVPN

Now: £82.19 (£6.85 per month)  (49% off)

Get 49% off ExpressVPN, a premium service one of our favourite VPNs.

When you click through to the deal, the £5.48 per month figure is the average cost when spread over 15 months. But if you consider the final three months to be free, the actual monthly cost for the first 12 months is £6.85.

8. Hidden24 VPN three-month subscription

From: Hidden24

Now: £9.99 total for 3 months with code idg1709

Get Hidden24 VPN for just £3.33 per month for 3 months using the exclusive code idg1709.

How to find the best VPN deal for Mac

VPN subscriptions typically work out cheaper if you commit for a year or longer, which saves a lot of money. Prices rarely exceed £6 per month with multi-year subscriptions and are often closer to £2-3.

Many major VPN providers offer discounts through the year, and sometimes even offer permanent discounts. These discounts can look impressive at first. It's not uncommon to see a countdown timer telling you when the deal ends – but such deals are usually available for a much longer period and the timer is really just a scare tactic to make you buy immediately.

Of course even with year-round discounts, deals do change, and it's possible you can pick up a better deal at certain times over others. Yet large discounts aren't too surprising. This makes it all the more important to look into the various providers and what each has to offer, before jumping into a long term commitment.

Keep in mind that VPNs are not all equal. Some services are better in some respects than others. For instance, PureVPN offers the most countries and NordVPN offers the most servers, while others, such as ExpressVPN, Surfshark and Cyberghost are great for streaming video.

Many VPNs like NordVPN offer cross-device coverage too, so you can use it on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. We've separately rounded up the best iPhone VPNs and iPad VPNs so be sure to check those out too.
