Channel 4 has recently updated its 4oD app to allow users to download apps to their iPad or iPhone to watch offline. This can come in really handy for holidaymakers or commuters. Here, we show you how to download TV shows from the 4oD app to watch offline on your iOS device.

Read our review of the 4oD app here.

First, if you haven't done so already, you'll need to download the 4oD app from the iOS app store. Launch the app, and you'll see six tabs along the left side of the screen.

In order to download a TV show, first you'll need to find one you want to watch. You can search using the magnifying glass, or use the 4oD Recommends, Catch Up, Categories, Collections and A-Z Programmes menus to find what you're looking for.

Once you've found a show, you need to find out whether it is available as part of 4oD's download service. We found that only a small portion of the shows on the app are actually available to download. If it is, it will have a tiny icon that looks like an arrow pointing into a tray. You can see the icon next to the blue squares in the image above. Tap that, and then tap Download.

You'll be greeted by a window that asks you to sign in. If you haven't already registered with Channel 4, you'll need to before you can use the download service.

Tap 'Register now' to bring up the sign up form, where you'll need to enter your full name, email address, home address, date of birth and gender, and you'll also need to come up with a password.  Channel 4 says that this information helps inform programme decisions and helps attract advertisers. If you tick the 'Keep me posted' box, you'll also get newsletters about Channel 4 events.

Before you can go further, you'll need to confirm your email address by going to your inbox, finding the email from Channel 4 and following the instructions in the email message.

Now that you're signed in, you can start downloading shows to watch later. Note that you need to be connected to the internet via WiFi before you can download a show.

Go to the show you want to download and tap the download icon, then press 'Download'. It'll change to 'Getting ready', and then will tell you how many minutes you've got left before the download has completed, as well as the size of the file.

You'll need to make sure your iOS device has enough space remaining to store the show you're downloading. If you haven't got enough space, you'll need to remove some images, videos, apps or other content from your device to make room.

Once downloaded, your show will appear in the Downloads tab. Here, you can see how many days you have left to watch the show. Each episode is available to watch offline for seven days.

Tap the show's image in order to play the episode. You can make the programme full screen by tapping the square icon next to the 'Done' button.

Downloading shows can be very useful for long car journeys, watching TV while you're on the commute, or taking away on holiday with you to watch on a chilly evening in your hotel room.
