Intro

The iPad is a great tool for photographers on the road, allowing them to upload and sort through their pictures, wherever they are. But there have been surprisingly few apps for editing those images.

FX Photo Studio HD is one of the best apps we’ve found for this on Apple’s tablet, enabling you to carry out basic changes within seconds. It offers a fairly sophisticated selection of filters, effects and frames, and you can even pick out the parts of the image you want effects to apply to.

It’s easy to get polished results even from humdrum snaps, while getting stuck in with the filters allows you to create dramatic results, ranging from hipsterish low-fi effects to stencil-graffiti looks. The image used here was created by Ell Ness and is via Flickr Creative Commons.

Step 2 of 7: Step 1: In a spin

Our image is slightly tilted, so go to Tools > Crop and select 1° or 5°. You rotate the cropping frame, rather than the image, which is slightly counter-intuitive if you’re used to Photoshop. Pull the frame to your desired image size and hit Apply.

Step 3 of 7: Step 2: A light touch

When you’re happy with your framing and light levels, save a copy. Now let’s get stuck in with the filters and effects. Although these can look extreme in the sidebar’s thumbnails, if used sparingly they can subtly boost an image.

Step 4 of 7: Step 3: Special FX

FX Photo Studio HD has almost 200 filters, frames and effects. These range from the indispensible to the outright cheesy. Sift out your favourites by hitting the stars, or if you’d rather work from a smaller palette, flick undesired effects leftwards and tap Hide.

Step 5 of 7: Step 4: Behind the mask

To add an effect to only part of your image, tap Draw Mask, then Paint FX, and paint a mask. Tweak the thickness and hardness of your brush using the sliders to the right. If you’re aiming for a detailed mask picking out a particular object, tap Show Mask.

Step 6 of 7: Step 5: Full zoom

Here, we’re applying effects to the building only. They will be subtle enough that we’ve got some leeway. Use a thin brush and Pan & Zoom for the outline, filling it in with a thicker brush; use the Erase FX tool and a fine brush to make adjustments.

Step 7 of 7: Step 6: Rinse and repeat

Tap Done to see your mask, using the slider to jack it up or down. You can apply effects on top of one another – and even re-use masks. Tap Load Recent Mask, then Invert to apply your new filter or effect to everything but the area you’ve already altered.
