The normal methods of turning an image into mono, like the Black and White filter, gradient map or Channel Mixer, can still produce average results.

The normal methods of turning an image into mono, like the Black and White filter, gradient map or Channel Mixer, can still produce average results. 

 

Step 2 of 3: Step 2

Go to Image> Adjustments> HDR Toning. Select Monochromatic Artistic preset to start with a mono conversion. Use high Detail to set contrast and definition.

 

Step 3 of 3: Step 3

Set Highlight to -40% to darken the sky and use 250+ Radius and Strength to enable clouds to stand out as well as details on the ground.
