Apple’s new MacBook laptops – the 12in MacBook and 13in and 15in MacBook Pro – feature just the latest USB-C connectors, rather than standard USB ports or Thunderbolt as found on previous MacBooks, and still found on the MacBook Air.

So what if you need to attach a new MacBook to the VGA port of a second screen or projector?

USB-C MacBook users have to get used to carrying round a bundle of adapters and dongles that allow their shiny new laptops to connect with older legacy equipment. In truth, such “old” devices aren't ancient at all. There just aren’t many USB-C accessories around just yet.

We have rounded up the best USB-C adapters and dongles for the Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro, but there aren’t many that include a USB-C to VGA connector.

Apple sells one – the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter, but this is expensive at £69 or US$69. If you must have the Apple version, and it looks and works as great as an adapter can, then fork out for the official solution.

Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter

It includes a VGA port, plus a standard USB port and another USB-C port so you can still connect a power source while using this adapter - which could be important if you are semi-permanently attached to a VGA screen, you are doing a long presentation, or watching a movie with a low MacBook battery. Otherwise you might not need the extra ports.

The Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter lets you mirror your Mac display to a VGA-enabled projector, TV or display in up to 1080p HD.

Thankfully there are cheaper third-party USB-C to VGA adapters.

Benfei USB-C to VGA Adapter

The Benfei USB-C to VGA adapter costs just £12.99 or $13.99, and offers just VGA – no extra USB-C port for charging at the same time or other standard USB ports. But it does what you need it to do.

Lention USB-C to VGA Adapter

The Lention USB-C to HDMI and VGA Digital AV Adapter (in Silver or Space Grey) costs twice as much, at £25.99 or $25.99, but includes the more modern HDMI connection too.

Arktec USB-C to VGA Adapter

Arktek makes a USB-C to VGA adapter that mimics the more expensive Apple adapter, with VGA, standard USB and an extra USB-C port for charging. – yet it costs just £13.99 or $17.99

There are many more non-Apple USB-C to VGA adapters available on Amazon.
