The MacBook Pro, described by Apple “The quintessential professional notebook,” has been updated. There is also a separate thinner version of the MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Pro includes the latest Intel Core i5 or Core i7 Ivy Bridge dual-core processors, offering speeds of up to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.6GHz. The 15in MacBook Pro offers new Intel Core i7 quad-core processors up to 2.7GHz with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.7GHz.
The high end MacBook Pro also offers 1600MHz memory and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M discrete graphics as well as the intergrated graphics that Apple claims are up to 60% faster.
The discrete graphics are faster too, the GeForce GT 650M (Kepler architecture) is up to 1GB faster, and 60 per cent faster than previous discrete graphics, according to Phil Schiller. Both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro have also been updated with the powerful discrete graphics from NVIDIA.
Both the 13in and 15in MacBook Pro can be configured with a 1TB hard drive or SSDs up to 512GB that are up to twice as fast as the previous generation. The MacBook Pros offer two USB3 ports that also accomodete USB2, and of course high speed Thunderbolt.
The 13in MacBook Pro is available with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and 500GB hard drive starting at £999, and with a 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory and 750GB hard drive starting at £1,249. Previously the prices were £999 and £1,299, so there has been a minimal price drop on the top of the range 13in.
The 15in MacBook Pro is available with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB of memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, and 500GB hard drive starting at £1,499; and with a 2.6 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, and 750GB hard drive starting at £1,799. Previous prices were £1,549 and £1,849, so both of those models have had their price reduced.
The new MacBook Pro ships with Lion, but Apple says that new customers will be elegible for Mountain Lion when that ships in July.
