Apple has announced its ‘Best of 2012’ Apps, Games, Music, TV, Movies and podcasts. 

Apple App Store - Apps & Games of the Year

The number one selling iPhone App of 2012 is WhatsApp Inc's WhatsApp Messenger, the cross-platform smartphone messenger. We imagine that the app has become increasingly popular as consumers start to adopt non-Apple smartphones. 

Apple's Pages is the number one selling iPad App of 2012

Airbnb is iPhone App of the Year. The app is described as “building a community around private rentals” and Apple says it “revolutionized travel”. 

Paper by FiftyThree is iPad App of the Year: “Ideal for jotting down notes, sketches or your next big idea,” says Apple. 

Rayman Jungle Run is iPhone Game of the Year offering “stellar control and stunning graphics”. 

The Room is iPad Game of the Year, a “mesmerising, original puzzle game”. 

iTunes Music of 2012

Emeli Sandé's Our Version Of Events is the number one selling album on iTunes of 2012  

Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) is the number one selling song on iTunes of 2012.

Olympic performer Emeli Sandé is iTunes Artist of the Year. 

Carly Rae Jepson's Call Me Maybe is iTunes Song of the Year, described as “cleverly composed and sublimely addictive”.

Is Your Love Big Enough by 23-year old London-based Lianne La Havas is the iTunes Album Of The Year.  

Performance of the Year is awarded to Various Artists: Isle of Wonder, Music for the Opening Ceremony at the London Olympics. “A true wonder with incredible music composed by Underworld”, says Apple.

iTunes Store - Best Films of 2012

The best blockbuster is Avengers Assemble with its “mind-blowing special effects”.

Best british film is The Woman in Black, described as “dary, elegant storytelling woven with gothic scares”.

Best director went to Christopher Nolan for the Dark Knight Rises.

Best performance goes to Michael Fassbender for his “chilling and engaging” performance in Prometheus.

iTunes Store - Best TV of 2012

Best series went to “tense and gripping drama” Homeland season 1.

Best episode is from Sherlock series 2, ‘A Scandal in Belgravia’. 

Breakthrough Series was Nordic drama ‘The Bridge’

Best cast goes to The Thick Of It: “Filled with hilariously cantankerous double-crossing politicios, this series boasts some of the UK’s finest talent”. 

iBookstore - Best Books of 2012

Elite sports story Gold by Chris Cleave is Best Fiction, Apple notes the “perfect timing” of the Olympic year. 

Best non-fiction is Clare Balding’s My Animals and Other Family, the Olympic connections continue.  

Best made with iBooks Author goes to Discovery Channels Speed Machines, a “rich, highly interactive book”. 

Best Young Adult book goes to The Fault in Our Stars, a “brilliant and honest triumph”. 

Also noted in the literature category are Hilary Mantel’s Bringing Up The Bodies, J.K Rowling’s Casual Vacancy, Zadie Smith’s NW, and Mark Haddon’s The Red House. 

Apple's best Podcasts of 2012

Best new audio Podcast is The Empire Film Podcast made by the “eagle-eyed critics” of that film magazine. 

Best Audio Podcast is Friday Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4 where Sandy Toksvig leads a satirical, competitive recap of the week’s headlines. 

Best new video podcast is MinutePhysics which uses stick figures and stop-animation to teach complex scientific concepts. 

Best Video podcast is YouGPoD which features “bizarre, DIY animations and a slightly off-kilter sense of humour”.
