Apple is the second most popular computer brand among US students, with low-cost machines from Dell taking first place, a survey claims.

As reported by MacNN, recently surveyed 1,000 US students to find out which kind of computer they used. Dell emerged as most popular with 33 per cent of the vote, but Apple tool second place with 23 per cent - seven points ahead of HP.

Future purchase patterns seem set to make Apple the most popular computer on US campuses, with 44 per cent of students saying they'd buy a Mac next time they buy a PC.

Just 21 per cent of students said their next machine would be a Dell.

The survey identified Apple's and Dell's student purchasing schemes as adding grist to both company's student sales mills, and Apple's recent move to offer students buuying a new Mac an iPod nano has also stimulated sales, the survey said.
