The iPhone is a GameBoy - at least for those prepared to hack the device - as a group of hackers have just released a GameBoy Advanced emulator for Apple's must-have device.

The emulator, gpSPhone, has been made available for download, and while the sound quality of games played through the emulator is described as a little patchy, it's still a strong indicator of what's possible.

Aside from the need to break Apple's security in order to install applications onto the iPhone, there are some caveats to using the emulator, reports the Unofficial Apple Weblog. Users must supply their own games and BIOS.

"There's still some work to be done in terms of compatibility/performance, but it's rapidly improving. And thanks to NerveGas we now have a nice iPhone and iTouch GUI and sound is now outputted," the developers explain.
