Apple has filed patents that suggest it’s research and development teams are considering a smaller clamshell iPhone.
The newly-disclosed patent application waas filed in the US in September 2006. It shows a device that’s around half the size of current generation iPhones, featuring a transparent dual-sided touch sensitive trackpad.

The patent implies this touch sensitive technology would interface with a virtual on-screen controls (as per the current iPhone), and points out that it could also be applied to other handhelds and computers.
The patent also highlights the technology could be applied to "other handhelds and computers". As described, when used with a computer the touchpad would open up a small window on the main display, while the tablet would boast a touchscreen encompassing the entire display.
