Apple has shipped a new version of its iPod Reset Utility for Mac and Windows systems.
iPod Reset Utility 1.0.2 is designed to return both generations of iPod shuffle to their factory default settings. The software is an emergency kit that's designed for use in situations in which iTunes can't reset an iPod shuffle.
Apple warns that the restore process "completely erases all music and data on your iPod, and installs current iPod software on it."
The software is designed to address the following iPod problems:
- iPod will not play music, and cannot be restored using iTunes.
- iPod is not recognized by iTunes, but is visible in My Computer or in Device Manager on a Windows PC, or in Apple System Profiler on a Mac.
- iPod shuffle (First Generation) is identified as a device in "Recovery mode." iPod shuffle (Second Generation) is identified as a "USB DFU device."
