Global demand for Blu-ray media is expected to exceed supply this year, now the battle between the format and HD-DVD is done.
As reported by The Times, Screen Digest speculates that demand for the media will triple this year, posing sever strain on manufacturers. Global demand for Blu-ray discs is reach 43 million units this year, but top producer Sony can only meet 60-70 per cent of that demand (38 million discs).
This news implies that mass deployment of Blu-ray solutions will have to wait until manufacturing ramps-up to meet the predicted demand. The news may also mean Apple may wait until these problems are resolved before introducing support for Blu-ray within Macs.
The news also suggests that Blu-ray will remain a relatively expensive medium for film fans for some time.
