Almost 90 per cent of UK internet users access the network using broadband, official research reveals.
The Office of National Statistics reveals that 88.4 per cent of internet users in the UK use broadband, rather than dial-up, almost half of these are using fast broadband services.
The figures also reveal that broadband take-up is slowing down, though usage has climbed 26 per cent in the last 12 months.
The confirmed slow-down in take-up leaves fears that the digital divide between UK people with and without internet access could become accentuated.
"The social and economic progress of the UK will be stalled unless the great majority of these homes can be brought on to the internet," Point-Topic analyst Tim Johnson told the BBC.
