Contrary to reports that circulated on Wednesday, Universal Pictures Thursday issued a terse statement indicating that those reports were inaccurate.
"Contrary to unsubstantiated rumours from unnamed sources, Universal's current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group.
Earlier this week, Toshiba, Microsoft, Universal, and Paramount all reiterated their support for the HD DVD format. If Universal and Paramount do stick to their guns, we could still see the two formats continuing to persist for a while more.
In the end, this format war will be decided by the critical mass of content availability. The format with the most content behind it will gain the most momentum among the masses.
