Legendary UK band, The Charlatans plan to make their 10th album available for free download.

It's a significant sea change for digital music that follows Prince's recent move to give his album away.

The Charlatans album will be available in its entirety as a free download from radio station XFM’s website.

The release begins with You Cross My Path, the first single from the album, which will be available for download on 22 October.

The as-yet untitled album - currently being mixed - will be available early in the New Year. Both the single and album will also be featured on the band's website.

Creation Records founder and manager of The Charlatans, Alan McGee, said: “Why would you volunteer to join the army for 10 years unless you had no choice? Record companies are kind of like the army - very regulated.

We were really excited when XFM got behind us and were as enthusiastic about the download as we are - they are the first people to embrace music for the people. The band will get paid by more people coming to gigs, buying merchandise, publishing and synch fees. I believe it’s the future business model."
