US mobile network operator Cingular plans to launch a music service.
Cingular has been much discussed as a potential partner for Apple in its purported plans to launch an iPod-mobile phone hybrid.
Previous reports have posited that Apple will partner with Cingular as network provider for the iPod phone, should such a device appear.
However, the Wall Street Journal reports that Cingular's new service will rely on partnerships with Apple's competitors in the digital media space, including Napster, Yahoo and eMusic.
Initially, the service will let owners of music-enabled mobiles transfer music to their devices from their computer using USB.
Subscription services and Windows Media format songs will be supported, the report explains.
