Apple's iPhone was the fastest-rising search term in the US in 2007, Google announced last night.

Technology and entertainment topped Google's searches in 2007, the company revealed in a webcast last night. Marissa Mayer, vice-president of Search Products & User Experience at Google, hosted the webcast.

In 2006, Google described its Hot Trends forecast. "We looked for those searches that were very popular in 2006 but were not as popular in 2005 - the explosive queries, the topics that everyone obsessed over. To come up with this list, we looked at several thousand of 2006’s most popular searches, and ranked them based on how much their popularity increased compared to 2005.”

Reflecting the explosion of such services, four social networking sites made the top 10: Webkinz, MySpace, Facebook and Club Penguin.

Celebrity news and Google's own YouTube service also appeared on the US search list - and iPhone was the top emerging search term on international lists, Google also revealed.

This year's top 10 emerging search trends are:

1 iPhone

2 Webkinz

3 TMZ

4 Transformers

5 You Tube

6 Club Penguin

7 MySpace

8 Heroes

9 Facebook

10 Anna Nicole Smith.
