Skype has announced a half price deal on sending text messages through the internet telephony service.

The service already boasts 196 million users worldwide, offering them free Skype-to-Skype calls and a range of cheap tariffs for calling landline and mobile numbers. It also supports video calling.
Stefan Öberg, vice president and general manager of telecoms at Skype observed: “SMS messages are a quick and easy way for people to instantly share their thoughts or whereabouts with their friends who may be offline or on the move."

Between 2-8 May, Skype users worldwide who send SMS messages to recipients in the United States, Australia, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, Belgium, Thailand, Ireland, Austria and Italy will be charged half the usual rate.
